Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschaftsforschung e.V. - HR

The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). It also maintains a research station with further locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

We are offering a postdoc position within the Einstein Research Unit Climate and Water under Change (CliWaC). This transdisciplinary research initiative addresses water-related risks under climate change for a series of case studies in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. This postdoc position at ZALF will be responsible for assessing the risks posed to current cropping systems by water and climate related extremes, as well as quantify trade-offs between productivity, yield stability, nitrogen losses and soil carbon sequestration of adapted water and crop management. The position will involve substantial improvement to a process based cropping systems’ model to capture various effects of heavy rainfall on crop growth and yield formation, as well as innovative approaches to quantify risks to and trade-offs between ecosystem services. The position will be based in the Cropping System Analysis working group at ZALF at the Müncheberg campus initially for two years (TVL13) starting from February 2022 with a likely extension for another year (subject to final approval of the funding contract).

We are offering subject to final funding approval a full time position for two years at our location in Müncheberg as

Postdoctoral researcher (f/m/d)

Working field:

  • Improvement of a process based cropping system model to consider effects of excess rainfall on crop growth and yield formation
  • Calibration and testing of a cropping system model for current crop rotations in the region
  • Tradeoff assessments of climate and water-related risks and adaptation options
  • Exploration of participatory methods to use crop models together with farmers in the Brandenburg region to support more sustainable and resilient cropping systems
  • Publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals

Requirements:

  • PhD in crop or plant physiology, agricultural engineering, ecology, mathematics, physics or similar
  • Experience using process based crop or ecological simulation models
  • Computer programing or scripting skills in (e.g., C++, java, python, R,…)
  • Experience in conducting climate change impact assessments
  • Strong statistical and quantitative assessment skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Good team work skills with willingness to collaborate across disciplines and openness to conduct transdisciplinary research

What we offer:

  • Interdisciplinary working environment that encourages independence
  • Opportunity to collaborate with leading international scientists and networks in cropping and eco-system analysis
  • Strong institutional commitment to a good work-life balance
  • Classification according to the collective agreement of the federal states (TV-L) up to E 13 with a 100% weekly working time (including special annual payment)
  • A collegial and open-minded working atmosphere in a dynamic research institution
