A Pre­doc­toral Research Fel­low

start­ing on 1 Septem­ber 2017 for the dur­a­tion of one year (an exten­sion up to two years is pos­sible depend­ing on fund­ing).

The appoint­ment is made at 100% of the reg­u­lar work­ing hours (cur­rently 39 hours/week).

The WZB is a pub­licly fin­anced inter­na­tional social sci­ence insti­tu­tion that con­ducts basic research that is the­ory-based and prob­lem-ori­ented (see: The pos­i­tions will be attached to a new research unit to be estab­lished in July 2017 in the field of Insti­tu­tions and Polit­ical Inequal­ity (Dir­ector: Pro­fessor Macartan Humphreys). The new unit will use obser­va­tional and exper­i­mental meth­ods to study major prob­lems related to the polit­ical eco­nomy of social and polit­ical inequal­ity with a focus on the polit­ical eco­nomy of inter­na­tional devel­op­ment.

Work­ing field:

The researcher will con­duct research and provide research sup­port to the research unit on top­ics related to the unit’s them­atic research areas. He or she will be con­duct­ing stat­ist­ical ana­lysis, devel­op­ing new instru­ments for data col­lect­ing, con­duct­ing lit­er­at­ure searches, and devel­op­ing manuscripts and other doc­u­ments.


A mas­ter degree in a social sci­ence dis­cip­line or stat­ist­ics is required. Stat­ist­ical skills are essen­tial includ­ing com­pet­ence in R and/or STATA as well as excel­lent Eng­lish writ­ing and com­mu­nic­a­tion skills. Pref­er­ence will be given to applic­ants with field work exper­i­ence. The pos­i­tion is ideal for a can­did­ate with a mas­ters in hand who wants to develop fur­ther research expos­ure and develop research design and ana­lysis skills before embark­ing on a PhD.

What we of­fer:

Salary for the pos­i­tion: Group E 13 TVöD (in accord­ance with Ger­man pub­lic ser­vice col­lect­ive agree­ment).
