Tech­ni­sche Uni­ver­si­tät Dres­den - Faculty of Arts, Huma­nities and Social Sci­en­ces, Insti­tute of Phi­lo­so­phy

The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship (W1) in Prac­tical Phi­lo­so­phy with a rese­arch focus on eva­lua­tive and ethi­cal ques­ti­ons of tech­no­logy inno­va­tion and/or digi­ti­sa­tion of all areas of life
(W3 with Ten­ure Track)

As part of the Ten­ure Track Pro­gramme, the Insti­tute of Phi­lo­so­phy at the Faculty of Arts, Huma­nities and Social Sci­en­ces invi­tes app­li­ca­ti­ons for the
Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship (W1) in Prac­tical Phi­lo­so­phy with a rese­arch focus on eva­lua­tive and ethi­cal ques­ti­ons of tech­no­logy inno­va­tion and/or digi­ti­sa­tion of all areas of life
(W3 with Ten­ure Track) initi­ally limi­ted to a four-year con­tract as a tem­porary public offi­cial, to be fil­led at the ear­liest pos­si­ble date. Fol­lo­wing a posi­tive inte­rim eva­lua­tion, the con­tract will be exten­ded to a total of six years. In the fifth year, a ten­ure eva­lua­tion by a faculty-wide and school-wide com­mis­sion will be car­ried out. Fol­lo­wing a posi­tive eva­lua­tion, a per­ma­nent Chair (W3) of Prac­tical Phi­lo­so­phy with a rese­arch focus on eva­lua­tive and ethi­cal ques­ti­ons of tech­no­logy inno­va­tion and/or digi­ti­sa­tion in all areas of life will be gran­ted without a rene­wed call for app­li­ca­ti­ons.

Work­ing field:

Eva­lua­tion cri­te­ria mutually agreed upon when the posi­tion is accep­ted will form the basis of the eva­lua­tion pro­ce­du­res. Essen­tial ele­ments of the eva­lua­ti­ons will be the sci­en­ti­fic suc­cess in the form of qua­li­fied publi­ca­ti­ons that have been asses­sed in con­for­mity with inter­na­tio­nal stan­dards, the suc­cess­ful acqui­si­tion of third-party funds, docu­men­ted com­mit­ment in for­mats of know­ledge trans­fer, trans­di­sci­pli­nary com­mit­ment and esta­blish­ment of coope­ra­ti­ons with sci­en­tists from the STEM areas, as well as deve­lo­ping and car­ry­ing out lec­tu­res dedi­ca­ted to the rese­arch area, also in Eng­lish, with posi­tively eva­lua­ted teaching per­for­mance.
During the tem­porary Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship, the app­li­cant must prove that they are capa­ble of widely repre­sen­ting the sub­ject area of Prac­tical Phi­lo­so­phy with com­mit­ment to rese­arch and teaching, in great sys­te­ma­tic and his­to­ri­cal depth. The app­li­cant’s exper­tise is expec­ted in the aca­de­mic (as well as inter­di­sci­pli­nary) dis­course regar­ding nor­ma­tive ques­ti­ons, ari­sing from socie­tal, politi­cal and legal reper­cus­sions of tech­ni­cal and sci­en­ti­fic trans­for­ma­ti­ons rele­vant for society, and in par­ti­cu­lar from the inter­re­la­ti­ons­hips bet­ween tech­no­logy inno­va­tions and tech­no­lo­gi­cal and socie­tal change in rela­tion to indi­vi­du­als, society and the envi­ron­ment.
The res­pon­si­bi­li­ties also include the par­ti­ci­pa­tion in teaching cour­ses in Bache­lor, Mas­ter and teacher trai­ning pro­gram­mes in Phi­lo­so­phy/Ethics, as well as the active invol­ve­ment in the aca­de­mic self-admi­nis­tra­tion and aca­de­mic com­mit­tees of the faculty. The app­li­cant is expec­ted to be invol­ved in rese­arch rele­vant to obtai­ning third-party fun­ding in the con­text of the Faculty of Arts, Huma­nities and Social Sci­ence. Fur­ther­more, wil­ling­ness for rese­arch-ori­en­ted coope­ra­tion with the natu­ral sci­ence and tech­ni­cal insti­tu­tes of TU Dres­den is expec­ted. The wil­ling­ness and to con­duct clas­ses in Eng­lish is also requi­red.

Require­ments:

App­li­cants must ful­fil the employ­ment qua­li­fi­ca­tion requi­re­ments of § 63 of the Act on the Auto­nomy of Insti­tu­ti­ons of Hig­her Edu­ca­tion in the Free State of Sax­ony (Hig­her Edu­ca­tion Act of the Free State of Sax­ony – SächsHSFG).

TU Dres­den sup­ports ten­ure track pro­fes­sors with a pro­gramme spe­ci­fi­cally tailo­red to their needs. Men­to­ring, various coa­ching ses­si­ons, and spe­cial con­ti­nuing edu­ca­tion pro­gram­mes and sup­port offers pro­vide active pro­fes­sio­nal gui­dance throughout the dura­tion of the tem­porary Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship.
