Work­ing field:

The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate will work in the BMBF-fun­ded Pro­jekt MILAS, in close cooper­a­tion with the Paul-Drude-Insti­tut für Festkörperphysik in Ber­lin. This pro­ject is aimed at the real­iz­a­tion of a new type of laser in the frame of sil­icon photon­ics and at the devel­op­ment of the neces­sary tech­no­logy for integ­ra­tion. The work com­prises the­or­et­ical stud­ies, design of com­pon­ents, its char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion and real­iz­a­tion. There will be a strong cooper­a­tion with the PDI in Ber­lin.
  • the­or­et­ical invest­ig­a­tion of optical grat­ing struc­tures for coup­ling and res­on­at­ors
  • real­iz­a­tion and char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of grat­ing struc­tures, devel­op­ment of fab­ric­a­tion tech­no­logy
  • devel­op­ment and real­iz­a­tion of a sil­icon based optical board for the laser com­pon­ent
  • optical char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion and optim­iz­a­tion of the laser com­pon­ent
  • PhD thesis pre­par­a­tion is pos­sible


  • suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in the field of elec­trical engin­eer­ing or phys­ics, prefer­ably very good degree
  • very good know­ledge of optical com­mu­nic­a­tions
  • well-foun­ded know­ledge in the field of sil­icon photon­ics, lasers and integ­rated optics
  • ideally exper­i­ence in numer­ical sim­u­la­tions of optical com­pon­ents and grat­ing struc­tures
  • very good know­ledge of sil­icon and semi­con­ductor tech­no­logy
  • know­ledge and exper­i­ences in the area of optical grat­ings are desired
  • very good eng­lish lan­guage skills are neces­sary
