The Chair of Fluid Mechanics and Institute of Aerodynamics belong to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University. The institute is composed of experimental and numerical divisions. With approx. 30 publicly and industrially funded research projects and an annual level of expenditure of around 2.0 Mio. €, the Chair of Fluid Mechanics and Institute of Aerodynamics belong to the strongest university research institutes in the field of fluid dynamics in Germany.

The research group
Research group within the Emmy Noether program of the German Research Foundation (DFG): „Separation control with Air Jet Vortex Generator arrays in transonic and supersonic flow“.

The project
Shock-induced flow separation strongly influences the aerodynamic behavior of many applications in aerospace transportation. The ubiquity and strong influence of these flows motivated great efforts to develop methods that reduce the detrimental effects of separation. This project investigates a promising and very versatile technique: Air Jet Vortex Generators (AJVGs). An array of small continuous air jets inserts vortices into the boundary layer. The vortices entrain high-momentum fluid and increase turbulent mixing, which leads to smaller separation zones and a reduction of the associated unsteadiness. The system is relatively simple, yet more flexible than mechanical devices. Efficient control requires to understand the governing mechanisms in the uncontrolled flow field. This is the first main project goal. The second objective is to analyze the separation-control mechanisms and parameters of Air-Jet Vortex-Generator arrays. On this basis, the next aims are optimized control setups for more complex models, simulating the relevant effects for transonic airfoils and inlets of supersonic air-breathing engines. The last goal is to expand separation control towards higher speeds important for novel space-transportation concepts and to assess the Mach number influence on the control concept. To get access to data of a quality that could not be achieved before, and to get a multilayered access to the problem, the group approaches these tasks with closely intertwined experimental and numerical methods.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate

Work­ing field:

  • You have the oppor­tu­nity to cont­ri­bute to an ambi­tious rese­arch pro­ject and to be part of a moti­va­ted inter­di­sci­pli­nary rese­arch group.
  • You will carry out nume­ri­cal simu­la­tion of the inves­ti­ga­ted sepa­ra­tion con­trol set­ups as well as the com­pa­ra­tive base­line cases, both in exch­ange with the expe­ri­men­tal inves­ti­ga­ti­ons that are also car­ried out wit­hin the group. The data ana­ly­sis, inter­pre­ta­tion and visua­liza­t­ion of results will be car­ried out in close col­la­bo­ra­tion with the expe­ri­men­tal branch of the rese­arch group.
  • You will include stu­dents into the pro­ject and will super­vise Bache­lor and Mas­ter the­ses as well as stu­dent rese­arch assis­tants. Also the wri­ting of reports and publi­ca­ti­ons in reviewed inter­na­tio­nal jour­nals will be part of your tasks, as well as the pre­sen­ta­tion of your rese­arch results in natio­nal and inter­na­tio­nal con­fe­ren­ces.
  • A sci­en­ti­fic work­shop will take place in the third year of the pro­ject, and you will be invol­ved in the orga­niza­t­ion of this work­shop.


  • App­li­cants must have a doc­to­rate/Ph.D. or equi­va­lent.
  • You hold a uni­ver­sity degree (Mas­ter of Sci­ence or com­pa­ra­ble) in the fields of mecha­ni­cal or aero­s­pace engi­nee­ring or mathe­ma­tics with above-aver­age gra­des. You have com­ple­ted your doc­to­ral degree in the area of nume­ri­cal fluid dyna­mics with an excel­lent grade. You have suc­cess­fully publis­hed first arti­cles in the peer-reviewed jour­nals rele­vant for your field.
  • You are ambi­tious, are moti­va­ted to work in aca­de­mia, and are inspi­red by your rese­arch topic and sci­en­ti­fic work. You carry out your work tho­roughly and inde­pendently. Fur­ther­more, you are moti­va­ted to col­la­bo­rate clo­sely wit­hin this expe­ri­men­tal/nume­ri­cal rese­arch group as well as with pro­ject part­ners.
  • Your pro­found know­ledge on com­pres­si­ble flow and tur­bu­lence is com­bi­ned with pro­found metho­di­cal skills in the nume­ri­cal simu­la­tion of com­pres­si­ble tur­bu­lent flows, par­ti­cu­larly with Large Eddy Simu­la­ti­ons. You have excel­lent oral and writ­ten Eng­lish lan­guage skills.

The posi­tion is initi­ally limi­ted until 31.7.2020 and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. This is a full-time posi­tion.

The salary cor­re­sponds to level TV-L EG 13.
