Master-/ Diploma Thesis "Characterization of Passive Flap Valves in Lateral Microfluidic MEMS-Devices (IPMS-2018-132)
Flow-regulation and -generation on a micrometer length scale are of high scientific and industrial interest in the ongoing trend of system miniaturization. The Fraunhofer IPMS thereby uses a patented class of lateral electrostatic bending actuators to develop a set of silicon based Micropumps and Microvalves devices. The flow rectifying elements namely the passive flap valves of the micropumps are thereby crucial for a high performance of the device. Does the flow exhibit a laminar flow profile around the valve body or does a limiting turbulence occur during the operation? To answer this question an optical method of flow visualization called micro-Particle Imaging Velocimetry (µPIV) is available.
Determine key settings in µPIV Workspace for measurements of in-house fabricated microfluidic devices
Characterization of the flow around passive valves in the micropump-chips
Evaluation of the dynamic valve behavior
Calculation of fluidic mechanical dimensionless numbers (Reynolds number,…)
Verification of simulation results and analytical models by fluidic measurements

Knowledge of working in a laboratory and metrology techniques
