Work­ing field:

Within the frame­work of a European joint pro­ject in the Era FACCE-SUR­PLUS pro­gram, a labor­at­ory plug-flow reactor shall be used for acid fer­ment­a­tion of vari­ous bio­genic raw mater­i­als, the products shall be sep­ar­ated so that they can be used in fur­ther pro­cesses. With the help of gradi­ent meas­ure­ments, optimum oper­at­ing points shall be found, so that a small spec­trum of products is main­tained and a com­plete con­ver­sion can be achieved in a short time. Vari­ous meas­ur­ing and sampling points along the plug flow reactor are used to mon­itor the pro­cess change as a func­tion of the res­id­ence time. The inform­a­tion shall be used for pro­cess con­trol with flex­ible load­ing. The products obtained shall be pur­i­fied on a labor­at­ory scale and fed as sub­strates to mono­cul­tures for the pro­duc­tion of higher-qual­ity products. The dif­fer­ent pro­cesses shall be char­ac­ter­ized, and the cell physiology shall be fol­lowed by means of innov­at­ive ana­lysis tech­no­logy - partly also in real time - in order to derive recom­mend­a­tions for the pro­cess con­duc­tion. The effect of external enzyme addi­tions on the labor­at­ory pro­cess shall be invest­ig­ated together with part­ners. In addi­tion to work, there is the pos­sib­il­ity of obtain­ing a Ph.D. degree.
  • Design of plug-flow based acid fer­ment­a­tion with dif­fer­ent bio­genic raw mater­i­als and addi­tion of enzymes that were pre­vi­ously isol­ated by a European part­ner
  • Install­a­tion and oper­a­tion of sensors, acquis­i­tion of gradi­ents and cell-physiolo­gical char­ac­ter­ist­ics, para­meter sens­it­iv­ity ana­lysis and determ­in­a­tion of oper­at­ing modes that lead to stable oper­a­tion
  • Puri­fic­a­tion of products and eval­u­ation for the util­iz­a­tion as sub­strates in mono­cul­tures, par­tic­u­larly het­ero­trophic algae and bac­teria for the pro­duc­tion of value-added molecules in lab scale.
  • Sup­port dur­ing the install­a­tion of a pro­to­type in pilot scale.
  • Sup­port of sci­entific and pub­lic events within the frame­work of the pro­ject.


  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in the field of bio­tech­no­logy with proven micro­bi­o­lo­gical and engin­eer­ing spe­cial­isa­tions
  • Ideally, the can­did­ate has exper­i­ence in anaer­obic cul­tiv­a­tion, flow cyto­metry and meta­bolome ana­lysis as well as know­ledge of meta­bolic path­ways and cell physiology in anaer­obic cul­tures, in pro­cess ana­lysis and in basic sep­ar­a­tion meth­ods
  • Basic know­ledge of sensor tech­no­logy and biore­actor cul­tiv­a­tion is expec­ted
  • The will­ing­ness to act­ively par­ti­cip­ate in pro­fes­sional events is a pre­requis­ite. The can­did­ate should be char­ac­ter­ized by open com­mu­nic­a­tion and a good com­mand of Eng­lish (col­lo­quial and tech­nical lan­guage).
  • Know­ledge of Ger­man is advant­age­ous
the fol­low­ing know­ledge/skills are desir­able:
  • micro­bial cul­tiv­a­tion in labor­at­ory biore­actor
  • meta­bolic path­ways
  • basic ana­lyt­ical meth­ods for the determ­in­a­tion of primary and sec­ond­ary meta­bol­ites
  • stand­ard pro­ced­ures in bio­tech­no­lo­gical labor­at­or­ies
  • present­a­tion of sci­entific res­ults
