BasCat - Heterogeneous Catalysis

In 2011 the Cluster of Excellence “Unifying Concepts in Catalysis” (UniCat) and the chemical company BASF SE founded the new joint lab BasCat, an academic institution including about 15 scientists (PhDs, Postdocs) at the Technische Universität Berlin. Heterogeneous catalysis is crucial for meeting the challenges of our future. The partners of BasCat are dedicated to improve our fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalysis, to transfer this understanding to a new rational design concept for industrially relevant catalysts, and to bring these catalysts to application in industry.
The research project is dedicated to heterogeneous catalysis and carried out by multi-disciplinary teams. The work consists of evaluation of catalysts and kinetic studies. Experiments are carried out using parallel testing units for 4 to 8 catalysts and single tube reactors. Catalysts are tested and compared in screening tests. Selected catalysts will be studied in parameters field tests and transient experiments. Reaction mechanisms and reaction networks will be formulated based on the catalytic data and evaluated by kinetic modeling (microkinetic and formal kinetics). New catalyst design concepts for our synthesis team will be established based on the mechanistic insights. Teaching is expected.
Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in chemistry or chemical engineering with above-average success. You have expertise in industrial chemistry and an in-depth understanding of heterogeneous catalysis, especially of the selective oxidation of low alkanes. You gained practical experience in planning and conducting catalytic tests. Practical experience in processing of mass spectrometry and gas chromatography data as well as maintenance of such equipment is helpful. A strong interest in applied mathematics and computational simulation is mandatory. Deep knowledge of MS Excel and Origin are expected. Experience in modeling of kinetic data using Madonna or PrestoKinetics is helpful. Fluency in German and English is necessary.
