Work­ing field:

The "EU-Clean Sky pro­ject ESTiM­ATE" aims at the devel­op­ment of phys­ical mod­els and effi­cient algo­rithms for the pre­dic­tion of soot in aero-engine com­bus­tion cham­bers and the gen­er­a­tion of advan­ced soft­ware for the cor­res­pond­ing sim­u­la­tions. This approach will be sup­por­ted by ref­er­ence exper­i­ments for model devel­op­ment and model val­id­a­tion by mem­bers of the con­sor­tium. The exper­i­men­tal data will not only be used for the val­id­a­tion, but also as input for the model fine cal­ib­ra­tion under rel­ev­ant con­di­tions for aero-engi­nes.

The work­ing field of the pos­i­tion in ques­tion inclu­des exper­i­ments in tur­bu­lent coun­ter­cur­rent dif­fu­sion fla­mes and swirl-sta­bil­ized fla­mes at atmo­sphe­ric pres­sure. A new exper­i­men­tal facil­ity for tur­bu­lent coun­ter­cur­rent dif­fu­sion fla­mes will be built in coo­per­a­tion with a rese­arch team of the Karls­ruhe Insti­tute of Tech­no­logy (KIT). The object­ive is the devel­op­ment of an exper­i­men­tal data­base for ker­osene fuel sur­rog­ates for the devel­op­ment of kin­etic and soot mod­els and the val­id­a­tion of CFD-cal­cu­la­tions from other work pack­ages of the par­ent pro­ject.

Require­ments:

  • suc­cess­fully com­ple­ted uni­ver­sity degree (Dip­lom, Mas­ter or equi­val­ent) in engin­eer­ing or phys­ics (Engin­eer­ing Sci­ences, Mech­an­ical Engin­eer­ing, Pro­cess Engin­eer­ing, Aero­naut­ics and Astro­naut­ics or else)
  • com­ple­ted PhD in the field of com­bus­tion of liquid fuels, focus­ing on soot gen­er­a­tion
  • excel­lent know­ledge in com­bus­tion dia­gnostics and espe­cially in the area of emis­sion meas­ure­ment and opti­cal meas­ure­ment tech­niques for soot gen­er­a­tion are requi­red
  • exper­i­ence in build­ing or extend­ing exist­ing com­bus­tion test rigs will be of a advant­age
  • com­mu­nic­a­tion abil­it­ies, team­work exper­i­ence and excel­lent know­ledge of Eng­lish are reques­ted
