University Professor – salary grade W3
for the Chair of Media Studies with Focus on Web Science.
The prospective position holder is to represent the Chair of Media Studies with Focus on Web Science in research and teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences at TU Berlin. The professorship will address the computer-aided analysis of complex communication systems and relational data relating to human actors from the perspective of media theory and media research, which now can be acquired in large quantities via online networks (Big Data). There is a thematic focus on digital transformation and its implications.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach in both English and German.
Candidates must fulfill the requirements for appointment at the level of professor in compliance with Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG). These include a completed academic degree, higher academic qualifications (doctorate), Habilitation or equivalent achievements (scientific publications) in a subject area within the fields of media science, social science or information science (media science, sociology, communication science, psychology, political science, computer science), as well as pedagogical and didactic aptitude as demonstrated by a teaching portfolio (for further information see TUB website, quick access 144242). Candidates should have advanced expertise of, and teaching experience in the theories of systems and networks in the social sciences, a clear perspective on media theory and a willingness to address research topics from the area of digital humanities. Candidates are expected to have experience regarding the extraction and processing of large data quantities, and advanced knowledge of the statistical processes of network analysis as well as the visualization of the results of social network analyses. They are further expected to have experience dealing with empirical research topics relating to digital media and to have published their own research in these areas.
The scope of the professorship includes teaching in the faculty’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programs as well as participating in the faculty’s and institute’s committees. Within the institute, close cooperation is expected with the Chairs of Audio Communication, Communication Science, Linguistics, and German as a Foreign Language. The position holder is further expected to work closely with other chairs within the faculty as well as with chairs in Faculty IV (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science), Faculty VI (Planning Building Environment), and Faculty VII (Economics and Management).
