Uni­versity Pro­fessor – salary grade W3

for the Chair of Media Stud­ies with Focus on Web Sci­ence.

Work­ing field:

The pro­spect­ive pos­i­tion holder is to rep­res­ent the Chair of Media Stud­ies with Focus on Web Sci­ence in research and teach­ing in the Bach­elor’s and Mas­ter’s pro­grams offered by the Fac­ulty of Human­it­ies and Edu­ca­tional Sci­ences at TU Ber­lin. The pro­fess­or­ship will address the com­puter-aided ana­lysis of com­plex com­mu­nic­a­tion sys­tems and rela­tional data relat­ing to human act­ors from the per­spect­ive of media the­ory and media research, which now can be acquired in large quant­it­ies via online net­works (Big Data). There is a them­atic focus on digital trans­form­a­tion and its implic­a­tions.
The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate will be expec­ted to teach in both Eng­lish and Ger­man.

Require­ments:

Can­did­ates must ful­fill the require­ments for appoint­ment at the level of pro­fessor in com­pli­ance with Sec­tion 100 of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act (Ber­lHG). These include a com­pleted aca­demic degree, higher aca­demic qual­i­fic­a­tions (doc­tor­ate), Habil­it­a­tion or equi­val­ent achieve­ments (sci­entific pub­lic­a­tions) in a sub­ject area within the fields of media sci­ence, social sci­ence or inform­a­tion sci­ence (media sci­ence, soci­ology, com­mu­nic­a­tion sci­ence, psy­cho­logy, polit­ical sci­ence, com­puter sci­ence), as well as ped­ago­gical and didactic aptitude as demon­strated by a teach­ing port­fo­lio (for fur­ther inform­a­tion see TUB web­site, quick access 144242). Can­did­ates should have advanced expert­ise of, and teach­ing exper­i­ence in the the­or­ies of sys­tems and net­works in the social sci­ences, a clear per­spect­ive on media the­ory and a will­ing­ness to address research top­ics from the area of digital human­it­ies. Can­did­ates are expec­ted to have exper­i­ence regard­ing the extrac­tion and pro­cessing of large data quant­it­ies, and advanced know­ledge of the stat­ist­ical pro­cesses of net­work ana­lysis as well as the visu­al­iz­a­tion of the res­ults of social net­work ana­lyses. They are fur­ther expec­ted to have exper­i­ence deal­ing with empir­ical research top­ics relat­ing to digital media and to have pub­lished their own research in these areas.
The scope of the pro­fess­or­ship includes teach­ing in the fac­ulty’s Bach­elor’s and Mas­ter’s pro­grams as well as par­ti­cip­at­ing in the fac­ulty’s and insti­tute’s com­mit­tees. Within the insti­tute, close cooper­a­tion is expec­ted with the Chairs of Audio Com­mu­nic­a­tion, Com­mu­nic­a­tion Sci­ence, Lin­guist­ics, and Ger­man as a For­eign Lan­guage. The pos­i­tion holder is fur­ther expec­ted to work closely with other chairs within the fac­ulty as well as with chairs in Fac­ulty IV (Elec­trical Engin­eer­ing and Com­puter Sci­ence), Fac­ulty VI (Plan­ning Build­ing Envir­on­ment), and Fac­ulty VII (Eco­nom­ics and Man­age­ment).
