The project "Mind the Fungi - Fungi and the Biotechnology of the Future" was approved as part of the strategic call from funds of the TU's internal research funding "Citizen Science". Within the scope of the "Bioprocess Engineering" subdivision, fungul cultivations are performed on a plate and shaking flask to lab bioreactor scale. In addition to the experimental work, support has to be provided for the implementation of workshops, the conduction of (popular and scientific) publications and the organisation of public events.
An essential task is the cultivation of fungi to identify suitable media and growth conditions. The fungi are collected from habitats in and around Berlin and isolated by lay people during joint events.
The isolates are cultivated in different forms and characterized in terms of growth kinetics. Media optimisation and initial physiological and morphological evaluations will be carried out using different laboratory methods, which will depend to a large extent on growth and aggregation behaviour and will be performed in tailor-made bioreactors.
Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in the field of biotechnology, food sciences or related disciplines.
Proven knowledge in handling shake flasks for microbial cultivation is necessary.
Experience with microscopy and other biotechnological analytical methods is desirable
Knowledge of cultivating microorganisms (e.g. in shake flasks) including media preparation, inoculation and standard control methods such as pH measurement and dry weight determination is required.
The handling of common data processing systems such as Microsoft Office is also necessary.
Ideally, the candidate should have experience in handling strains, media selection, staining organisms for easy detection and differentiation of cultures.
Knowledge of regulatory and morphological relationships in the growth of fungi is also desirable.
Knowledge in the field of process control by means of sensors using different measuring principles is an advantage.
The willingness to actively participate in interdisciplinary and public events is a pre-requisite. The candidate should be characterized by an open way of communication and good language skills (conversational and foreign) in German and English.
