Work­ing field:

The pro­ject "Mind the Fungi - Fungi and the Bio­tech­no­logy of the Future" was approved as part of the stra­tegic call from funds of the TU's internal research fund­ing "Cit­izen Sci­ence". Within the scope of the "Biopro­cess Engin­eer­ing" sub­di­vi­sion, fungul cul­tiv­a­tions are per­formed on a plate and shak­ing flask to lab biore­actor scale. In addi­tion to the exper­i­mental work, sup­port has to be provided for the imple­ment­a­tion of work­shops, the con­duc­tion of (pop­u­lar and sci­entific) pub­lic­a­tions and the organ­isa­tion of pub­lic events.
An essen­tial task is the cul­tiv­a­tion of fungi to identify suit­able media and growth con­di­tions. The fungi are col­lec­ted from hab­it­ats in and around Ber­lin and isol­ated by lay people dur­ing joint events.
The isol­ates are cul­tiv­ated in dif­fer­ent forms and char­ac­ter­ized in terms of growth kin­et­ics. Media optim­isa­tion and ini­tial physiolo­gical and mor­pho­lo­gical eval­u­ations will be car­ried out using dif­fer­ent labor­at­ory meth­ods, which will depend to a large extent on growth and aggreg­a­tion beha­viour and will be per­formed in tailor-made biore­act­ors.

Require­ments:

  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in the field of bio­tech­no­logy, food sci­ences or related dis­cip­lines.
  • Proven know­ledge in hand­ling shake flasks for micro­bial cul­tiv­a­tion is neces­sary.
  • Exper­i­ence with micro­scopy and other bio­tech­no­lo­gical ana­lyt­ical meth­ods is desir­able
  • Know­ledge of cul­tiv­at­ing microor­gan­isms (e.g. in shake flasks) includ­ing media pre­par­a­tion, inocu­la­tion and stand­ard con­trol meth­ods such as pH meas­ure­ment and dry weight determ­in­a­tion is required.
  • The hand­ling of com­mon data pro­cessing sys­tems such as Microsoft Office is also neces­sary.
  • Ideally, the can­did­ate should have exper­i­ence in hand­ling strains, media selec­tion, stain­ing organ­isms for easy detec­tion and dif­fer­en­ti­ation of cul­tures.
  • Know­ledge of reg­u­lat­ory and mor­pho­lo­gical rela­tion­ships in the growth of fungi is also desir­able.
  • Know­ledge in the field of pro­cess con­trol by means of sensors using dif­fer­ent meas­ur­ing prin­ciples is an advant­age.
  • The will­ing­ness to act­ively par­ti­cip­ate in inter­dis­cip­lin­ary and pub­lic events is a pre-requis­ite. The can­did­ate should be char­ac­ter­ized by an open way of com­mu­nic­a­tion and good lan­guage skills (con­ver­sa­tional and for­eign) in Ger­man and Eng­lish.
