Institut für Experimentelle Endokrinologie, Charité Berlin

The "Institute of Experimental Endocrinology" is located on the premises of the Virchow Clinic. Research is carried out on hormonal regulation pathways with a focus on energy metabolism, neuroendocrinology, thyroid axis and the interaction of these aspects with the trace element selenium.

Development of a stem cell-based model of the thyroid gland (Master Thesis)

Working field:

Master Thesis!

The thyroid gland as an endocrine organ and source of thyroid hormones is an important regulator in the human organism, for example for its energy metabolism. Thyroid hormones also play a decisive role in the prenatal and early childhood development and maturation of the CNS.

In addition to a number of diseases that can affect the thyroid gland, various (industrial) chemicals are also suspected of influencing its function. In addition to simple enzyme and transporter tests, more and more intergovernmental models (organoids) are gaining a role in the examination of such questions. These models (organoids) represent the function of an organ (limited) and thus potentially have a higher physiological significance.

Such a system will be adapted and further developed at the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology. Murines, embryonic stem cells are differentiated into small, functional subunits of the thyroid gland (so-called follicles). This already established system is to be improved by the candidate and optimized for broader application.

Can be coupled to an student assistant contract.

In addition to solid basic knowledge and practical experience in cell culture, experience in the cultivation of stem cells is an advantage. The demanding culture conditions of ESCs require a reliable and careful working style with a certain degree of flexibility.

What we offer:

The candidate will be introduced to sophisticated cell culture, cytological and molecular biological purification and analysis techniques.
We offer an exciting and friendly working environment, the possibility to develop and test your own ideas as well as remuneration as a student worker.
