The "Insti­tute of Exper­i­men­tal Endo­crino­logy" is loc­ated on the pre­mi­ses of the Virchow Cli­nic. Rese­arch is car­ried out on hor­monal reg­u­la­tion path­ways with a focus on energy meta­bol­ism, neur­oen­do­crino­logy, thy­roid axis and the inter­ac­tion of these aspects with the trace ele­ment sel­en­ium.

The thyroid gland as an endo­crine organ and source of thyroid hor­mones is an import­ant reg­u­lator in the human organ­ism, for example for its energy meta­bol­ism. Thyroid hor­mones also play a decis­ive role in the pren­atal and early child­hood devel­op­ment and mat­ur­a­tion of the CNS.

In addi­tion to a num­ber of dis­eases that can affect the thyroid gland, vari­ous (indus­trial) chem­ic­als are also sus­pec­ted of influ­en­cing its func­tion. In addi­tion to simple enzyme and trans­porter tests, more and more inter­gov­ern­mental mod­els (organoids) are gain­ing a role in the exam­in­a­tion of such ques­tions. These mod­els (organoids) rep­res­ent the func­tion of an organ (lim­ited) and thus poten­tially have a higher physiolo­gical sig­ni­fic­ance.

Such a sys­tem will be adap­ted and fur­ther developed at the Insti­tute of Exper­i­mental Endo­crino­logy. Mur­ines, embryonic stem cells are dif­fer­en­ti­ated into small, func­tional sub­units of the thyroid gland (so-called follicles). This already estab­lished sys­tem is to be improved by the can­did­ate and optim­ized for broader applic­a­tion.

Require­ments:

In addi­tion to solid basic know­ledge and prac­tical exper­i­ence in cell cul­ture, exper­i­ence in the cul­tiv­a­tion of stem cells is an advant­age. The demand­ing cul­ture con­di­tions of ESCs require a reli­able and care­ful work­ing style with a cer­tain degree of flex­ib­il­ity.

The can­did­ate will be intro­duced to soph­ist­ic­ated cell cul­ture, cyto­lo­gical and molecu­lar bio­lo­gical puri­fic­a­tion and ana­lysis tech­niques.
