in the field of "Food Con­tact Mater­i­als".

The W2 pro­fess­or­ship at TU Ber­lin is to be fil­led in a joint appoint­ment pro­ced­ure wit­hin the frame­work of the “Ber­liner Model” and inclu­des the dual pos­i­tion as head of the unit “Safety of Food-Con­tact Mater­i­als” at BfR. The ini­tial employ­ment con­tract is lim­ited to 5 years with the option for fur­ther con­tinu­ation.

Work­ing field:

Rese­arch in the field of food con­tact mater­i­als and food safety shall invest­ig­ate pos­sib­il­it­ies for identi­fy­ing pro­cess-indu­ced tox­ic­o­lo­gic­ally rel­ev­ant chem­ical com­pounds and search for ways of min­im­iz­ing or repla­cing them dur­ing pro­duc­tion. The fol­low­ing sub­jects are of par­tic­u­lar inte­rest in terms of the inter­de­pend­ence of food and con­tact mater­i­als:
  • Migra­tion (of toxic sub­stan­ces) from food con­tact mater­i­als
  • Invest­ig­a­tions regard­ing the nano-fur­nish­ing of food con­tact mater­i­als and the release of nan­o­ma­ter­i­als
  • Invest­ig­a­tion on optim­ized food con­tact mater­ial prop­er­ties with regard to inert­ness and tox­ic­o­lo­gical safety
  • Pro­cess-indu­ced modi­fic­a­tions of food con­tact mater­i­als and their influ­ence on the way that sub­stan­ces and par­ti­cles are released
  • Mod­el­ling of migrat­ory pro­ces­ses

The BfR unit “Safety of Food-Con­tact Mater­i­als” deals with the health assess­ment of food con­tact mater­i­als. The busi­ness man­age­ment of the BfR “Kom­mis­sion für Bedarf­s­ge­gen­stände” (Com­mit­tee for Con­sumer Pro­ducts) is based at the BfR unit. At BfR, the pos­ted pos­i­tion inclu­des the fol­low­ing roles and respons­ib­il­it­ies:
  • Chair­ing the unit “Safety of Food-Con­tact Mater­i­als” at the Depart­ment for Chem­ic­als and Pro­duct Safety
  • Fur­ther­ing sci­ent­i­fic devel­op­ment in the area of chem­ic­als and pro­duct safety and main­tain­ing the set of BfR recom­mend­a­tions on food-con­tact mater­i­als
  • Respons­ib­il­ity for BfR com­mis­sion meet­ings and asso­ci­ated com­mit­tee meet­ings
  • Pro­vid­ing sci­ent­i­fic advice to the Ger­man Fed­eral Gov­ern­ment and fed­eral aut­hor­it­ies as well as sup­port­ing the fed­eral sta­tes towards imple­ment­ing the Food, Com­mod­it­ies and Feed Code (LFGB)
  • Par­ti­cip­at­ing in natio­nal and inter­na­tio­nal rese­arch pro­jects
  • Rep­res­ent­ing the BfR on natio­nal and inter­na­tio­nal com­mit­tees

At TU Ber­lin, the pos­i­tion invol­ves teach­ing respons­ib­il­it­ies of 2 hours per semes­ter (2 SWS) and requi­res suf­fi­cient lan­guage pro­fi­ciency to teach clas­ses in Ger­man and Eng­lish. The pro­fes­sor shall also offer top­ics and act as super­visor of Bach­elor, Mas­ter and Doc­toral the­ses.


Can­did­ates must ful­fill the appoint­ment require­ments for pro­fess­or­ships in accord­ance with §100 Ber­lHG (Ber­lin Hig­her Edu­ca­tion Act) [inform­a­tion sheet avail­able by request]. This inclu­des a com­ple­ted course of aca­demic stud­ies in a rel­ev­ant field, qual­i­fied achieve­ments in rese­arch (PhD), post-doc­toral lec­ture qual­i­fic­a­tion (Habil­it­a­tion) or addi­tio­nal sci­ent­i­fic achieve­ments, (doc­u­men­ted by rel­ev­ant pub­lic­a­tions in journ­als with app­rai­sal pro­ced­ures) and ped­ago­gical didac­tic qual­i­fic­a­tions (pro­ven by a teach­ing port­fo­lio. Other fac­tors taken into account are an abil­ity to lead a large R&D work­ing group in the field of food-con­tact mater­i­als and pro­ven com­pet­ence in obtain­ing and coor­din­at­ing third party fund­ing.
The BfR pos­i­tion as group lea­der requi­res proof of inter­na­tio­nal coo­per­a­tion in the field of rese­arch with rel­ev­ant pub­lic­a­tions. Lead­er­ship and team­work skills, a fam­ily-fri­endly man­age­ment style, resi­li­ence and a will­ing­ness to tra­vel com­plete the pro­file. Exper­i­ence in the fol­low­ing areas is also wel­come: work­ing with inter­dis­cip­lin­ary teams, pro­mot­ing the care­ers of young schol­ars, and gen­der main­stream­ing.
