Working field:

Collaboration in the research project BaU-SaN (Application of Bayesian statistics for model calibration and uncertainty analysis of energy retrofit planning in non-residential building portfolios). In energy building simulation of non-residential buildings, simulated values are often deviant compared to measured values due to limited availability of building information. The deviation is difficult to quantify using conventional deterministic simulation and calibration methods. Therefore, the renovation planning and decision based on these methods is risky. The objective of the research project is to develop, validate, and optimize a Bayesian theory-based calibration methodology that enables automated quantification of the uncertainty in energy building simulation and retrofit planning of non-residential building portfolios and identification of the unknown/nondeterministic building information. The developed methodology will be applied and validated on more than 900 non-residential buildings simulated by conventional methodology in a previous project. Retrofit roadmaps are developed for the buildings and properties in the dataset, with uncertainties specified. By validating against consumption data and comparing with deterministic methods, the new methodology is investigated in light of its applicability and optimization potential for analyzing energy retrofits from individual buildings to aggregation of buildings at the neighborhood level. PhD thesis preparation is possible.


  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom oder Äquivalent) in a suitable discipline

We are looking for a person with in-depth knowledge at a scientific level in the field of:
  • Building energy systems
o System simulation (spec. Modelica/ Dymola) of buildings and plants
o Renovation measures of buildings and plants
  • Statistics
o Bayesian statistics
  • Programming (Python)
o Database pre- and postprocessing (MariaDB)
o Programming language Python
o Evaluation, control of simulations
  • Very good PC skills (hardware and software)
  • Ability to work in a team and to organize
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken German; willingness to learn the language skills that are missing in each case.
