Working field:

The selected candidates will have opportunities to work in an enriching interdisciplinary environment of the Software Defined Radio group at the Communications and Information Theory Chair (SDR-CommIT). There is significant potential for broad impact in terms of technology development, industry involvement, educational initiatives and working together with start-ups. The selected candidates are expected to develop a PhD-level research activity around the topics of the 6G Research Innovation Center (6G-RIC), focused on innovative solutions for future Wireless Communication Systems beyond 5G. This research project focuses on developing physical layer signal processing functionality and RF transceivers for a 6G cellular base station software defined radio (SDR). In particular the research focuses on real-time signal processing, FPGA implementation of baseband signal processing algorithms (e.g. massive MIMO, hybdrid beamforming, channel estimation and equalization, precoding, modulation/demodulation, calculation of precoding and beamforming weights), Matlab algorithm simulation, firmware and gateware development on Xilinx and Intel FPGAs, base station fronthaul interface development (using optical Ethernet/eCPRI), reception and transmission of RF signals using direct conversion and direct sampling RF transceivers, host software development in Matlab and (in a nutshell) software defined radio development. The positions are open for candidates with a Phd degree but also for candidates with the intention to write a Phd thesis with Prof. Caire supervising.


  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in a field related to Communication Systems and Information Technology, for example: Embedded Systems, Communication Systems, Signal Processing, VLSI Chip Design, Microwave Engineering, Radio Frequency Engineering, Wireless Systems, Electronics Engineering.
  • Experience with Xilinx or Altera FPGAs, microcontrollers, interfacing of RF transceivers (sub-6GHz), wireline multi gigabit transceivers, clock generation/distribution,
  • Experience in handling of RF/microwave measurement equipment (spectrum analyzer, RF signal sources, vector network analyzers)
  • Experience in the implementation of real-time digital signal processing components (e.g., OFDM modulation, channel estimation & equalization, hybrid beamforming, antenna calibration)
  • Experience with one or more wireless communication standards, e.g., UMTS, LTE, 5G-NR, WiFi, Bluetooth or GPS is a plus.
  • Experience with optical wireline 10G/25G Ethernet systems, O-RAN, eCPRI, SDR chips like the Analog Devices AD9361, ADRV9026 or the RFSoC from Xilinx are also a plus but are definitely not mandatory.
  • A doctoral degree is desirable, but not a requirement.
Furthermore, candidates should have excellent English oral and written communication skills (proficiency in German is a plus).
