Research Associate / PhD Student (m/f/x)

starting January 1, 2025. The position is limited to 3 years and entails 65% of the full-time weekly hours. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The position aims at obtaining further academic qualification (usually PhD). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (usually PhD).
The Chair explores the neural basis of socio-affective and -cognitive processes, their psychopathological changes and plasticity through psychotherapeutic intervention. The position will be in a DFG Research Grant Program (project number: 547263283) "Moving towards neuro-behavioral models of the determinants of high expressed emotion during social interaction among people with schizophrenia and their families". The projects tests interactions between cognitive flexibility, social cognition (empathy, theory of mind), and moral emotions (shame, guilt) in the development of a particular communication style between relatives (e.g., warmth versus critical comments), which affects the relapse rate in people with schizophrenia and family well-being. The research program is jointly run by a clinical psychotherapist and a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, who will be closely involved in project execution (including organization, clinical assessment, data analysis) and supervision of research associates.
As a university of excellence, TUD offers excellent research opportunities with the Neuroimaging Center (3 Tesla MRI, MRI-compatible 64-channel EEG and peripheral physiology system, TMS device, tandem fNIRS, transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS), multicomputer lab for behavioral measurement) and the University Outpatient Clinic and Research Center for Psychotherapy (UFP) of the TU Dresden gGmbH).

Working field:

The tasks include neuroscientific research activities in the project, such as implementing and analyzing functional MRI (fMRI) paradigms using advanced statistics such as graph analysis, multivoxel pattern analysis, and cross-task support vector classification. In this respect, the project is also collaborating with researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA and at the Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. Furthermore, the position includes project-related supervision of student employees and writing scientific publications. Own publication activities are expressly desired and will be supported accordingly.

Requirements:

very good university degree (Diploma/Master) in psychology or neuroscience, previous knowledge of neuroscientific methodology, especially fMRI, is desirable; interest in clinical-psychological and psychotherapeutic issues; sound knowledge of statistics, experimental psychology and clinical diagnostics; very good knowledge of English and German; very good communication, organizational and teamwork skills; time flexibility and professional approach to contact with test subjects (individuals with stabilized schizophrenia and their relatives). A planned or advanced postgraduate training as a psychotherapist or child and adolescent psychotherapist is supported.
