in the field of “Novel Train Sys­tems”

at the same time

Head of depart­ment “New Rail Vehicles”
at the Insti­tute of Vehicle Con­cepts at the Ger­man Aerospace Cen­ter (DLR),
with an option of either lim­ited or indef­in­ite renewal.

The DLR is the national aero­naut­ics and space, energy and trans­port research centre of the Fed­eral Repub­lic of Ger­many with more than 8000 employ­ees. The cent­ral topic of the Insti­tute for Vehicle Con­cepts at DLR is the devel­op­ment of future tech­no­logy sys­tems for sus­tain­able, safe and afford­able vehicle gen­er­a­tions on road and rail. The insti­tute's con­tri­bu­tions range from con­cep­tion and design, con­struc­tion, cal­cu­la­tion and sim­u­la­tion to the rep­res­ent­a­tion of research demon­strat­ors, com­pon­ents and vehicles.

Work­ing field:

The W2 pro­fess­or­ship at TU-Ber­lin, rep­res­ents the topic “Novel Train Sys­tems” in the Trans­port­a­tion degree pro­gram. The appointee will be on leave with a reduced teach­ing load (2 SWH) for DLR and takes over the lead of the “New Rail Vehicles” depart­ment at the DLR Insti­tute of Vehicle Con­cepts in Ber­lin-Adler­shof.

Top­ics are:
  • assess­ing, mod­el­ling and sim­u­la­tion of the load col­lect­ives on vehicles in dif­fer­ent fields of applic­a­tion
  • applic­a­tion of new mater­i­als, tak­ing into account rail vehicle require­ments such as fire pro­tec­tion, crash-wor­thi­ness, optim­ized use of space, costs of man­u­fac­tur­ing, dis­posal, life cycle assess­ment and approval
  • sys­tem­atic reflec­tion of oper­a­tions and cus­tomer friend­li­ness in con­sid­er­a­tion of com­fort, noise beha­vior and demo­graphic change
  • effi­cient energy man­age­ment for the oper­a­tion of mod­ern vehicles, reduc­tion of driv­ing res­ist­ances through light weight and struc­ture optim­iz­a­tion.


Can­did­ates must qual­ify for appoint­ment accord­ing to the require­ments of § 100 Ber­lHG, includ­ing an appro­pri­ate uni­versity degree, an excel­lent sci­entific record demon­strated by a PhD and multi-year indus­trial or equi­val­ent exper­i­ence as well as ped­ago­gical didactic qual­i­fic­a­tions, to be proven by a teach­ing port­fo­lio (for more Inform­a­tion see TUB Web­site, quick access no. 144242). Fur­ther­more, extens­ive exper­i­ence in the acquis­i­tion and imple­ment­a­tion of industry and pub­licly fun­ded major research pro­jects is expec­ted. Didactic skills, inter­na­tion­ally recog­nized research activ­ity, social skills and net­work­ing in the rel­ev­ant sci­entific com­munity com­plete the require­ments.
