The Chair of Fluid Mechanics and Institute of Aerodynamics belong to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University. The institute is composed of experimental and numerical divisions. The research group
Research group within the Emmy Noether program of the German Research Foundation (DFG): Separation control with Air Jet Vortex Generator arrays in transonic and supersonic flow.
Shock-induced flow separation strongly influences the aerodynamic behavior of many applications in aerospace transportation. The ubiquity and strong influence of these flows motivated great efforts to develop methods that reduce the detrimental effects of separation. This project investigates a promising and very versatile technique: Air Jet Vortex Generators (AJVGs). An array of small continuous air jets inserts vortices into the boundary layer. The vortices entrain high-momentum fluid and increase turbulent mixing, which leads to smaller separation zones and a reduction of the associated unsteadiness. The system is relatively simple, yet more flexible than mechanical devices. Efficient control requires to understand the governing mechanisms in the uncontrolled flow field. This is the first main project goal. The second objective is to analyze the separation-control mechanisms and parameters of Air-Jet Vortex-Generator arrays. On this basis, the next aims are optimized control setups for more complex models, simulating the relevant effects for transonic airfoils and inlets of supersonic air-breathing engines. The last goal is to expand separation control towards higher speeds important for novel space-transportation concepts and to assess the Mach number influence on the control concept. To get access to data of a quality that could not be achieved before, and to get a multilayered access to the problem, the group approaches these tasks with closely intertwined experimental and numerical methods.
Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate
You have the opportunity to contribute to an ambitious research project and to be part of a motivated interdisciplinary research group.
You will carry out numerical simulation of the investigated separation control setups as well as the comparative baseline cases, both in exchange with the experimental investigations that are also carried out within the group. The data analysis, interpretation and visualization of results will be carried out in close collaboration with the experimental branch of the research group.
You will include students into the project and will supervise Bachelor and Master theses as well as student research assistants. Also the writing of reports and publications in reviewed international journals will be part of your tasks, as well as the presentation of your research results in national and international conferences.
A scientific workshop will take place in the third year of the project, and you will be involved in the organization of this workshop.
Applicants must have a doctorate/Ph.D. or equivalent.
You hold a university degree (Master of Science or comparable) in the fields of mechanical or aerospace engineering or mathematics with above-average grades. You have completed your doctoral degree in the area of numerical fluid dynamics with an excellent grade. You have successfully published first articles in the peer-reviewed journals relevant for your field.
You are ambitious, are motivated to work in academia, and are inspired by your research topic and scientific work. You carry out your work thoroughly and independently. Furthermore, you are motivated to collaborate closely within this experimental/numerical research group as well as with project partners.
Your profound knowledge on compressible flow and turbulence is combined with profound methodical skills in the numerical simulation of compressible turbulent flows, particularly with Large Eddy Simulations. You have excellent oral and written English language skills.

The position is initially limited until 31.7.2020 and is to be filled as soon as possible. This is a full-time position.
The salary corresponds to level TV-L EG 13.
