The research focus of our group is the development of efficient separation processes in downstream processing of biomolecules and their integration with the upstream processing steps, in particular bioreactors. The research methodology involves model-based process design on the course “from biomolecule to process” and bridges the gap between molecular understanding and process implementation. The concept is general and hence applicable to diverse bioproducts of industrial relevance, including small molecules as well as macromolecules (such as proteins, polysaccharides, lipids and nucleic acids).
Research Group Leader Bioseparations (Downstream processing)
Perform independent, cutting-edge research in the area of bioseparations, with a focus on food, pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries
Continuous development of new research topics within the group strategy
Proactive acquisition of third-party funding
Support and guidance of doctoral candidates and undergraduate students in research
Teach engineering courses (thermodynamics, separation processes) at Bachelor and Master level
PhD degree in (Bio-)Chemical Engineering, (Bio-)Process Engineering or other relevant area
Sound research experience in the area of separation processes with preference to biomolecules
Ample experience in process modeling, simulation and optimization
Solid theoretical background in thermodynamics of mixtures
1-3 years of postdoctoral or industrial experience in the field of bioseparations is beneficial
Experience in analytical methods and design of experimental set-ups is beneficial
Strong communication skills, organizational talent and great interest in interdisciplinary collaboration
Knowledge of German language is an advantage

The position is open from March 1st 2019 and initially limited to 1,5 years, with a clear option for extension. Payment is according to qualification and follows TV-L (German Collective Agreement for Public Services). Substantial experimental facilities for the development of new ideas are available.
