One field of research of the Department of Energy Technology and Environmental Protection is the modeling of energy conversion systems and chemical engineering processes. In various projects, the dispatch of such plants is determined by mathematical optimization. In particular, with regard to future developments in the German (and European) energy markets, questions on the electricity and balancing energy market with fundamental models, developments in the district heating supply or the integration of flexibility options will be examined.
The aim of one research project is to determine future marketing strategies for energy conversion systems and chemical engineering processes, assuming different scenarios. For this purpose, methods of simulation and mathematical optimization are used. In particular, mapping the interaction of energy conversion plants and the electricity market with the different products (e.g., balancing energy) in mixed-integer linear models is one of the key challenges.
We are looking for a research assistant who will contribute to the research project. The development of research proposals for follow-up projects is part of the job.
Further tasks include:
Creation and further development of mathematical models for operational planning of energy conversion systems taking into account the electricity market and high shares of renewable energies
Representation of the project at project meetings and national and international conferences
Project management and reporting
Supervision of student assistants and theses
Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) with a focus on Energy Engineering, Energy Management, Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering or similar fields
Very good knowledge of energy conversion concepts and plants
Proven very good verbal and written German and English skills (C1 level)
Independent and structured way of working, ability to work in a team
Experience in simulation of energy conversion systems
Experience in the application of exergy-based methods
Knowledge of the German and European electricity markets
Experience in mathematical optimization, for example with the software tools GAMS, Julia or Python
Experience in the modeling of energy systems and development of energy transition scenarios
