Work­ing field:

One field of research of the Depart­ment of Energy Tech­no­logy and Envir­on­mental Pro­tec­tion is the mod­el­ing of energy con­ver­sion sys­tems and chem­ical engin­eer­ing pro­cesses. In vari­ous pro­jects, the dis­patch of such plants is determ­ined by math­em­at­ical optim­iz­a­tion. In par­tic­u­lar, with regard to future devel­op­ments in the Ger­man (and European) energy mar­kets, ques­tions on the elec­tri­city and bal­an­cing energy mar­ket with fun­da­mental mod­els, devel­op­ments in the dis­trict heat­ing sup­ply or the integ­ra­tion of flex­ib­il­ity options will be examined.
The aim of one research pro­ject is to determ­ine future mar­ket­ing strategies for energy con­ver­sion sys­tems and chem­ical engin­eer­ing pro­cesses, assum­ing dif­fer­ent scen­arios. For this pur­pose, meth­ods of sim­u­la­tion and math­em­at­ical optim­iz­a­tion are used. In par­tic­u­lar, map­ping the inter­ac­tion of energy con­ver­sion plants and the elec­tri­city mar­ket with the dif­fer­ent products (e.g., bal­an­cing energy) in mixed-integer lin­ear mod­els is one of the key chal­lenges.
We are look­ing for a research assist­ant who will con­trib­ute to the research pro­ject. The devel­op­ment of research pro­pos­als for fol­low-up pro­jects is part of the job.
Fur­ther tasks include:
  • Cre­ation and fur­ther devel­op­ment of math­em­at­ical mod­els for oper­a­tional plan­ning of energy con­ver­sion sys­tems tak­ing into account the elec­tri­city mar­ket and high shares of renew­able ener­gies
  • Rep­res­ent­a­tion of the pro­ject at pro­ject meet­ings and national and inter­na­tional con­fer­ences
  • Pro­ject man­age­ment and report­ing
  • Super­vi­sion of stu­dent assist­ants and theses

Require­ments:

  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) with a focus on Energy Engin­eer­ing, Energy Man­age­ment, Pro­cess Engin­eer­ing, Indus­trial Engin­eer­ing or sim­ilar fields
  • Very good know­ledge of energy con­ver­sion con­cepts and plants
  • Proven very good verbal and writ­ten Ger­man and Eng­lish skills (C1 level)
  • Inde­pend­ent and struc­tured way of work­ing, abil­ity to work in a team
Desired qual­i­fic­a­tions:
  • Exper­i­ence in sim­u­la­tion of energy con­ver­sion sys­tems
  • Exper­i­ence in the applic­a­tion of exergy-based meth­ods
  • Know­ledge of the Ger­man and European elec­tri­city mar­kets
  • Exper­i­ence in math­em­at­ical optim­iz­a­tion, for example with the soft­ware tools GAMS, Julia or Python
  • Exper­i­ence in the mod­el­ing of energy sys­tems and devel­op­ment of energy trans­ition scen­arios
