Big data presents a completely new set of challenges for data processing and data analysis. Large quantities of low-latency data can be analyzed using advanced machine learning techniques that lead to new realizations and predictions concerning complex relationships in (near-) real-time. However, these capabilities present immense ethical challenges, in terms of systems, algorithms, and data management in the course of conducting data analysis. Systems have to ensure fairness, diversity, transparency, neutrality, and provides data protection. Within this research project, technological basics and prototypes for responsible data management are to be researched and developed in order to ensure the above mentioned characteristics by testing and verification of algorithms as well as traceability and reproducibility on the basis of Open-Source and Open-Data. It should be noted that this position also carries teaching duties.
Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) and PhD in Data Management, Distributed Systems, or Scalable Data Analysis. They should be interested in developing a novel system and conduct research in a real-world application setting. Ideally, applicants should possess knowledge in programming languages and compilers, data science and machine learning as well as distributed programming. Applicants experienced in big data analytics systems, such as Apache Flink or Spark as well as open source development will be looked upon favorably. In addition, fluency in German and good knowledge of English are required. Moreover, past open-source project, industry, project management, or teaching experience will be looked upon favorably.
